SILVER ION CHROMATOGRAPHY OF LIPIDS
Silver ion chromatography has been one of the more important techniques in the armoury of lipid analysts for more than 40 years. In these pages, we will review the technique from both theoretical and more importantly practical standpoints. First, we present a major published review on the topic, then we have begun to produce some original articles.
Review of Silver Ion Chromatography
An earlier important review was published by the Oily Press in 1992, and they have kindly given us permission to reproduce it on this website -
For practical reasons, we have split this into five sections -

Those wishing to consult the most comprehensive and important recent review on the topic should obtain that published by the Oily Press in 2003 -
Nikolova-Damyanova, B. Lipid Analysis by silver ion chromatography. In: Advances in Lipid Methodology - Five. pp. 43-123 (2003) (Ed. R.O. Adlof, Oily Press, Bridgwater).
Aspects of Silver Ion Chromatography
- How to make a column for silver ion HPLC
- Solid-phase extraction chromatography in the silver ion mode - updated 9/4/08
Further original articles will be added here by Bill Christie, Boryana Nikolova-Damyanova and Richard Adlof when time and other professional commitments permit.
An introduction to silver ion chromatography of lipids is available elsewhere on this website in three short articles on our 'Topics in Analysis' pages here...
- while a list of references to the use of high-performance liquid chromatography in the silver ion mode for analysis of lipids is available here...
Although it is now mainly of historical interest, the first review on the topic by Lindsay Morris is available to all in the form of a PDF file as a free download from the Journal of Lipid Research, i.e. L.J. Morris. Separation of lipids by silver ion chromatography. J. Lipid Res., 7, 717-732 (1966). For your convenience we provide a direct link here, though please note that it is a very big file.
